The Greely Design Project

 Greely Design Project

By Dea Attar (La-Z-Boy In-Home Designer)

In January of 2019, I met with the DeAngelis family in Greely, Ontario. I was able to help transform their home with classy and contemporary architecture along with elegant and trendy furniture and fixtures. We played with monochromatic patterns and contrasting colours. This design project was one of my absolute favourite in-home makeovers for La-Z-Boy.

What were the client’s wishes for the room?

The DeAngelis’ needed help finishing the main floor of their home and asked for a timeless and low maintenance look. They wanted to create a nice flow in the open-concept space while maintaining the functionality of each room. To complete the living room makeover Mrs. DeAngelis wanted to coordinate colours between the different zones.

The “Before”

The home was a blank slate. The open-concept area included some old patio furniture that the clients were using temporarily while their house build was being completed. The home had a beautiful structure with high ceilings, big windows and a stunning oversized tile fireplace.

The kitchen had a big island and ample space for the dining area.

AFTER

How will the room be used?

The purpose of the great room is to host all daily activities — things like watching TV, reading and spending quality time with the grandkids. The eat-in area was to include a beautiful size dining set, a table to bring everyone comfortably together without feeling squeezed in.

The Designer’s Concept & Vision for the room

Inspired by the stunning architecture of the contemporary home, I wanted to find modern furniture and trendy finishes that wouldn’t be out of style in a few years. I proposed we work with greys, black and white to allow for a timeless feel and to provide flexibility with accessorizing. Working with a monochromatic theme, I wanted to play with patterns and create that much sought after ‘wow factor’!

The “After”

The result of this design project is a fashionable look that I believe will stand the test of time.

The space is now a well-coordinated combination of fabrics, leathers, metals, glass and stone. Its contemporary elegance is portrayed using different patterns and finishes. We introduced some wood elements to provide warmth and coziness.

In addition, we created symmetry by adding identical consoles and artwork on both sides of the fireplace. Not only does it generate emphasis around the living room’s focal point, but it accentuates the high ceilings in the room. Finally, pops of teals here and there add some pizazz and playfulness to the whole design.

As for the kitchen, an ultra-modern dining set keeps up with the same design feel. The continued grey colour scheme ties the rooms together. Meanwhile, the off-white frosted glass table that is easy to clean and maintain adds some contrast. Leather stools to match the style of the chairs complete the look.

The client’s reaction to the makeover!

“The room is tasteful and elegant but warm and inviting. Déa, our talented designer, did a fabulous job. We are very happy and proud to show our home to everyone.” A. DeAngelis of Greely, Ontario
