7 of Your Power Recliner Questions Answered

By Jenna Leblanc

La-Z-Boy has an excellent reputation for its long-lasting manual recliners, but how well do their power recliners hold up? When trying to choose the right chair, our clients often ask us, “is upgrading to power the right choice for me?”

Power recliners use a motor, or series of motors, to adjust and recline the chair into a comfortable position. It provides comfort and convenience simultaneously.

Power recliners have many features and options to choose from, such as:

Many La-Z-Boy power recliners are also available in a loveseat and a sofa.

Having so many options is the ultimate in relaxation and comfort. So why isn’t everyone going for Power?

Furniture is an investment, and it’s no secret that power chairs often cost more than manual recliners.

Here’s a list of the most common questions asked regarding Power Recliners:

  1. How do power recliners get power?
  2. How much energy does a power recliner use?
  3. Do power recliners have to be plugged in?
  4. How to hide power recliner cords?
  5. Are La-Z-Boy power recliners guaranteed for life?
  6. What is the best La-Z-Boy recliner?
  7. How long will the motor last?

In the end, we want this article to help you gather all the facts in order to make an informed decision.

1. How do power recliners get power?

Each reclining unit has a motor that connects to a cable that attaches to a power source. The power supply connects to a power cord that runs through the back of your sofa or chair and plugs into an AC outlet.

We don’t recommend using an extension cord, adapter or surge protector to plug in our power furniture.

2. How much energy does a power recliner use?

The input is 100V-240V,

The output is 29V

Duty Cycle 2min ON, max/18min

Efficiency level VI

The amount of power used depends, of course, on how much you use the recliner. In terms of cost, we’re talking a range of pennies to $5 per month.

3. Do power recliners have to be plugged in?

Yes, you will need to plug in your power recliner, unless you upgrade to a wireless lithium-ion battery pack.

“This battery allows you to free float power without unsightly cords and allows you to put power into areas with no power outlets. You can technically rock and recline in the centre of Algonquin park if you want!” J.S.*

The battery pack provides about five days of cordless operation when fully charged. (charge length depends on the usage, model and weight of the individual user. Consider as well the length of time you use the USB charger.)

The battery will beep to remind you when it needs to be re-charged.

4. How to hide power cords?

The wires that come from the base of the chair are very easy to hide by either feeding them underneath an area rug or by using a wire hiding box.  If you are building or renovating your home, consider an outlet on the floor over which you can place your power furniture.

If these solutions do not work, you can upgrade to a battery pack that hides underneath the chair.

5. Are La-Z-Boy power recliners guaranteed for life?

La-Z-Boy recliners use metal mechanisms and patented four-sided frame construction made of kiln-dried hardwoods. This construction makes the frame more secure vs some models with only two or three sides. The four-sided frame will ultimately provide a stronger foundation for the power components to keep them safe. Two and three-sided frames move side to side, causing the mechanism to loosen over time.

The La-Z-Boy recliner limited warranty is one of the best in the furniture industry and includes lifetime coverage on several of their products’ mechanical parts.  This includes reclining mechanisms, springs and spring systems, swivel base and wood frame parts.

6. What is the best (power) La-Z-Boy recliner?

When it comes to choosing the best power recliner for yourself or your family, there are several different styles, fabrics, leathers and features to choose from. There are also several different power control methods to consider.

These power control methods include:

  • Handheld  wireless remote control
  • Handheld cord remote (attached to chair/loveseat or sofa)
  • 4 side buttons with a USB (independent back and leg recline, independent back and leg upright position)
  • 2 side buttons with a USB (one button that reclines both your back and feet simultaneously and one that brings you back to an upright sitting position)
  • NEW Power toggle control is a right side sitting panel. It contains all power adjustments with easy to use toggles. This new control panel comes with a home button, two memory settings, and a USB charging port.

The best way to make the right decision is to try everything out and educate yourself on what works best for your lifestyle.
