Redesign in South Glengarry

The Before:

Picture this, a large open concept riverfront home located just outside of Ottawa in South Glengarry. The Morin Family welcomed In-home designer Dea Attar to help them redesign their space. The open concept space has high vaulted ceilings and large windows that let in lots of light with big views out onto the St Lawrence river. It was furnished with some older furniture, and decorated with a small pink rug, some purple and yellow painted walls and a basic white fireplace.

The clients were planning to upgrade the kitchen and add built-ins in the space. However, this small renovation turned into a more extensive room makeover that included revamping the entire living and dining area!

In the end, the Morin’s goal was to create an elegant timeless space with rustic elements that blend in with their country living.

The designer, Dea’s concept and vision for the redesign:

With the client’s goal in mind, Dea helped the Morin’s choose the kitchen finishes, the paint colour and the fireplace stone finish façade. She also provided a recommendation on the size and style of the light fixtures in the dining and kitchen area.

Dea sought symmetry to highlight the architectural details. The beautiful windows and the brand new stone fireplace with surrounding built-ins represented the two focal points in the room.   She introduced two sofas facing each other centered by the centerline of the windows.

Furniture and Accessories they chose for the space:

The Violet sofa has a classic look with flared arms and a crisp welt trim.

To complement the look, Dea added two tailored Thorne high-leg lounger chairs. These chairs feature flared rolled arms and elegant tufted backs. The Jewel coloured fabrics chosen are light and sophisticated and range from light cream to beige.

The hand tufted Surya rug has nice reflective qualities adding a glam effect. The pattern of the rug echoes that of the chair on a bigger scale to create continuity of the design.

The coffee tables Dea chose for the room have dramatic pedestals that combine caramel washed wood with a wrought iron base.

To make use of the dead space in the corner, Dea added a bar cabinet, a conversation piece for friends and family.

Above the sofa are a combination of nine black frames in sepia colours displaying the client’s travel photos. The frames face the high windows creating a balanced look.

As for the dining area, Dea went for a classic custom Canadel table in a dark coffee to tie into the new kitchen colour. She recommended two armed parsons chairs with an elegant camelback to be placed at each end. The table includes a self storing leaf and can be used when extra seating is required.

The After:

Dea’s makeover was finished beautifully with a soft and warm colour pallet and rich combinations of different materials and textures. The tones and finishes flow seamlessly from one space to the next creating a unique fusion between chic and clean.  The rust accents in the form of pillows, throws and accessories have been added to this timeless design. As these items are relatively low-cost, when the time comes to change things up; it would be an easy transition.
