Once a year, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) partners with Minto Communities to build a Dream Home, which serves as the grand prize of the annual lottery.
Designed by the interior designer, Tanya Collins, and furnished by La-Z-Boy, the large and spacious house transforms into a liveable space, not to mention stylish!
With the purchase of a lottery ticket, a lucky winner has the opportunity to receive the keys to this brand new home, along with multiple other prizes. The proceeds raised by the community will go towards high-priority needs in the children’s hospital.
Although there can only be one winner, much of the design style created by interior designer, Tanya Collins, can be re-created within your very own home.
Most of the furniture, as well as the accents and decor, are provided by our local Ottawa & Kingston La-Z-Boy furniture retailers. These stylish and comfortable furniture items found throughout the home are also available in-store.

This Year's Dream Home: The Caraway
Before we dive into exploring the specific pieces of furniture in the home, let’s discuss the inspiration behind the overall design of this year’s furniture choices.
The 2021 Dream Home is called the Caraway.
Located in Manotick, the Caraway home is reflective of the surrounding nature and picturesque views. The 4,603 square foot home is situated on an oversized corner lot. Based on a bungalow design, the home features a wrap-around porch and outside-in design elements inspired by nature including Manotick’s Mahogany pond.
The two-story home is spacious, consisting of 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. Not to mention a home theater, gaming room, and gym found in the basement.
It is important to highlight the fact that the Caraway is a Net Zero Energy Home. This means that the home produces as much energy as it consumes.
When it comes to the interior design, Tanya was inspired by a renewed sense of making everyday living more special, elevated, and simple, yet luxurious. With this, “the overall interior consists of a compilation of mid-century modern and art deco influences with a nod to Scandinavian design”, says Tanya.
This design vision is brought to life through the use of La-Z-Boy furniture and accents. Throughout the home, you will find a southwestern colour palette, a mix of eclectic materials, and circular shapes in the decor.
About Interior Designer Tanya Collins
Tanya Collins is the designer of this year’s Dream Home.
With experience decorating homes for over 18 years, Tanya is an established interior designer in Ottawa with her own business called Tanya Collins Design.
Furnished by La-Z-Boy
For over 20 years, La-Z-Boy is honored to furnish the CHEO Dream Home annually.
As a local, family-run business, furnishing the Dream Home is a great opportunity for La-Z-Boy to give back to the Ottawa community.
Cecile Panet-Raymond is the Merchandising Director at the local Ottawa and Kingston La-Z-Boy locations. Cecile has been the La-Z-Boy representative on this project for over 10 years.
Each year, Cecile facilitates and assists the home’s interior designer in translating their creative vision into reality by using mostly La-Z-Boy products for the furnishings and accessories.
This year, Cecile worked side-by-side with Tanya Collins to gain an in-depth understanding of her mid-century modern Scandinavian vision, and in turn, found the perfect La-Z-Boy products to align with the chosen style of the home.
Given that La-Z-Boy is a brand built for comfort, it isn’t always an easy task achieving the designers', oftentimes trendy and modern, vision.
To combat this, Cecile and the designer played around with many customizations, including fabrics and textures. Further, the accents and decor play a significant role in transforming the overall look of the furniture and portraying this year’s Scandinavian theme.
