The Inspiration Behind Colour Trends for 2025

Before we delve into some colour trends coming up this year, it is important to know the inspiration behind these trends and why they are appearing now.

As the decade enters the halfway point, the 2020s have made a name for themselves on several colour trends.

Looking at what was once done in the previous decade, we’ve seen quite the turnaround for colour. No longer are homes looking as neutral as they once were.  Yes, some interiors still look like this, but it is becoming less favourable to have a neutral colour palette.

Now, people are choosing to incorporate more colours, especially more vibrant colours. Magaly del Castillo, our La-Z-Boy interior designer at Cyrville, explains that people are starting to find a new sense of uniqueness since the pandemic.

“People want to embrace a lot of new colours we don’t normally see in homes, and that’s what’s interesting about interior design right now,” she says.

While the 2020s are proving to be more dynamic with colour palettes compared to the 2010s, not everyone is on board with these ideas just yet.

However, Zeina Badawi, our interior designer at La-Z-Boy Kanata, says that if you start slowly incorporating new colours in your home, you’ll see how much it could change the way you see your room. “Start with adding small greeneries around your home and see how you feel about them. Or start putting some yellows around the house if you want something lighter,” she says.

1. Dark Forest Green with a Touch of Chocolate Brown

Beginning with an ever-popular trend, natural colours have always been a popular colour trend that people can't seem to get enough of. Now more than ever, people are appreciating the natural colours that are coming out of nature.

Whether it’s an earthy brown, a sharp green or a calming sky blue, everyone is taking their interpretation of a natural colour palette and playing along with it to create interesting rooms.

Some interesting colours include terracotta, which can help create earthy warmth for those wanting a dark coffee table or dining area; and serene and sophisticated blues that make you feel like you’re deep in the ocean. And of course, there will always be greenery that will take over the common nature aesthetic.

Zeina believes these colours will forever dominate nature’s trendy colour palette. She also says incorporating dark greens with some brown accents around your home can help bring this vision to life.

“Start with painting your walls a dark forest green and then add some dark oak occasional tables into your space,” she says.

2. Warm Colours that Overtake a Room

Colours are becoming bolder and more dynamic, leading to more vibrant, interesting rooms. People are moving away from light greys and beiges, embracing warm and rich colour palettes instead.

There is also an interesting design trend called 'colour drenching'  which incorporates a singular colour and painting the entire room (including the ceilings), the entire colour. This opens up the space and creates a dynamic concept that isn’t for the faint of heart. Some popular colours for colour drenching include green, blue, pink and yellow.

While this may be a little bit intimidating, these colours don’t need to overtake the room. Magaly says that a simple accent wall can also help with adding that splash of colour people may be looking for in colour drenching, but just want to dip their feet in the shallow end.

3. Dark and Moody Colours

When it comes to a dark colour palette, we do not mean the colour black, but anything relating to a dark colour palette. Magaly emphasizes how too much of the colour black in a room can make a room feel smaller than it is, and can also leave a room feeling uninviting.

Dark colours like red and purple are becoming more common. However, they haven’t reached the market in Ottawa, Kingston or Gatineau just yet. Even though this is the case, people are starting to warm up to this idea.

This is especially true when it comes to complimenting the dark and moody colour palette with ambiance lighting.

Whether it is statement lighting, a table lamp in the corner of the room, or even a large window letting sunlight in, a dark colour palette can work if you incorporate some lighter tones into the entire room.

Magaly notes that with darker colours, it is always important to start small. “If you overwhelm the space with a dark colour, it might feel like too much all at once. Start small and see how you feel,” she says.

Sometimes contrast is also intriguing, so adding some white to a darker room could create some juxtaposition that can leave people craving a room like this. Some popular dark colours include the aforementioned reds and purples, but also browns, especially in cognac or anything closely related to a chocolate colour.

4. Lighter Rich Pinks with a Hint of Canvas White

Now you might be thinking, didn’t you say people are veering away from light colour palettes in favour of warm tones instead? Yes, but it doesn’t mean that people are still favouring light and rich colour palettes either.

As much as people enjoy a warm and rich colour palette, they are also having fun with light colours. As mentioned in the dark colour palettes, light-rich colours can make a space feel open and light, creating a sense of positivity.

Magaly notes that some interesting colours popping up from this particular trend are bubble gum pinks on draperies, pillows and even area rugs. Amber-toned neutral colours are also favoured in this type of trend, with the lighter feeling making you feel like you're outside in the sun.

The best way to start with this colour trend is to focus on the upholstery of your furniture. Magaly says, “A lot of light sofa fabrics are showcasing pink florals on a white background, which is perfect for this palette. Then add some pink or light accents around your living room to help ground the theme of your room.”

5. Futuristic Purple with Neon-Bright Colours

Another interesting trend we’re noticing this year, according to Zeina, is a futuristic colour palette. These “futuristic” colours are another version of rich and bold colours taking over a living space, with the primary colour mostly being purple.

“A deep digital lavender is a popular choice for this type of colour palette, usually paired with a neutral colour like grey or other metallic accents,” she says.

While this colour palette might seem a bit cold, these colours are normally seen on one accent wall and paid with LED lights that change colours.

Zeina says the best way to incorporate these colours in your room is to paint your wall a futuristic purple colour and to add neon accents around your living space–these colours can be teal or lighter shades of green and yellow.

“Some of the best rooms to add this colour palette in are in bedrooms with proper lighting or a basement for more depth,” she says.

Pantone's Colour of the Year 2025

Lastly, before we let you ponder the various colour palettes discussed within this article, we would also like to shine a little bit of light on Pantone’s colour of the year for 2025. While every paint company comes out with their colour of the year–which is reflective of this year’s trends–nothing seems to come close to the anticipation for Pantone’s unveiling.

Pantone's colour of the year, Mocha Mousse, reflects their continued push for bold and expressive choices in design.

This delicious and rich colour palette takes inspiration from earthy browns and dark leathers. While this colour may not associate immediately with other colour trends we’ve discussed this year, Mocha Mousse can be used in most of the colour palettes discussed.

Specifically, you can use this colour in the dark forest aesthetic or compliment it with a cognac brown for a real earthy-toned living room. You can also use it with lighter colours to create contrast.
