2024 is coming to a close, which means the start of a new year is upon us. While the start of a new year may bring uncertainty for what’s to come this year, it also brings new possibilities for creation! This doesn't only mean for yourself but also your home.
Design trends have come and gone throughout the years, and as much as they have been fun, they eventually become old news. With the start of a new year, however, the latest design trends will change our interiors for the better.
Some design trends may have remained popular, but newer ones are certainly rethinking the way we see our homes. In this article, we will be showcasing the 10 most popular design trends that will be taking form in 2025, with the help of our La-Z-Boy interior designers from our Ottawa, Gatineau and Kingston locations.
Key Takeaways:
- Many interior designers are seeing people steering clear from neutral tones, embracing a more saturated colour palette and sticking to one colour in a room.
- Adding the ceiling to your decor can help with creating a visually larger room and add more character to something we don’t particularly pay much attention to.
- Why add a sofa to your room when you can add chairs instead? A small space can also be complemented by just chairs and a great aesthetic.
- A cozy minimalist living room emphasizes texture and layers instead of focusing on colour.
- As neutral is slowly moving away from a lot of people’s homes, a lot of natural tones are being welcomed in instead.
- Accent pieces are no longer just your living room chairs or your pillows, but also area rugs!

1. Showcasing Modern Organic Interiors
To begin, one of the most forecasted design trends to come out this year is a modern organic living room. According to La-Z-Boy Kanata’s interior designer, Zeina Badawi, this design trend will continue to be popular in the coming year.
“Colours like sage green and sky blues will be perfect for bringing a sense of calm and connection to nature into your home,” she says. She also notes that the colours do not need to be a certain shade either. Whether you want to go harsh with colour or light is completely up to you.
Another prime example of a modern organic home is this year’s Minto Dream Home. The Oasis brought in a lot of natural elements to the interior of the home, which is displayed from the wooden tones throughout the home, and the ceramic textures surrounding the main level.

2. Having a Cozy Minimalist Living Room
One interior design trend returning from last year is having a cozy minimalist living room. However, this year, it seems to have formed a name for it, the name being quietude.
According to La-Z-Boy Kingston interior designer, Mary Lee Smyth, she says that Quietude Living takes a step back from what the room looks like, and puts emphasis on what’s in the room. Colour is still important, but not as much as comfort.
“Some people are looking for more layers in a room, visually and literally,” she says. This means adding interesting textures to your furniture, your pillows, your floors, and even your ceilings.
But texture is not the only thing playing a factor in this type of trend. The word quietude brings a sense of escapism, taking all the noise from outside and keeping it out. After all, you would want to forget about a long day at work and unwind on your furniture too, right? This is exactly what quietude tries to allow.
This design trend may take inspiration from Scandinavian living, which puts a lot of emphasis on coziness in a space with the ‘Hygge’ mindset.
3. Colour Drenching Your Living Room
Colour has never played more into a home than it does now. While it was the norm to have a monochromatic palette, we are slowly but surely stepping into a colourful world with many bold and overly saturated colours appearing in people's homes.
Need proof? Look no further than the 2023 Minto Dream Home. While this dream home was polarizing to the public with its rich greens all over, many interiors are starting to look like this.
When it comes to the term colour drenching, however, our interior designer at Hunt Club, Michelle MacLellan, explains it best. “It’s painting everything in the room the same colour, instead of having an accent wall. This means the baseboards, the trim and even the ceiling are all the same colour.”
Painting your room all one colour not only brings in possibilities to add shading and depth from the same colour, but it also helps make your room feel more open. This is also popular in not just living rooms, but bathrooms and powder rooms.

4. Embracing Nature Indoors
Another returning design trend is similar to modern organic but adds a bit more importance to having a green thumb. This type of design trend is called biophilic, which is different from modern organic because it focuses on plant life instead of all-natural and organic elements in nature.
While you can still add taupe colours, browns and other natural colours to this space, the main importance is greenery. Whether it is fake or real, these living rooms have lots of plant life, trickling zen water displays, translucent lighting and other elements that make you feel immersed in nature.
There is also a lot of natural light included in this design, too. This would make sense since live plants need sunlight to thrive. Mary Lee believes that biophilic design will always remain a timeless trend that will continue to be popular.
5. Introducing Dynamic Area Rugs
As mentioned earlier, warmer and more saturated tones of colour are becoming more popular in people’s homes. But what’s also becoming a popular trend is adding a dynamic area rug to your living room.
Of course, adding an accent piece has always been an interesting attention grabber for a living area. But, instead of it being the traditional accent chair, it’s adding a dynamic area rug to ground the space.
These area rugs can be bold in colour, texture or even both to add more interest to a room. Michelle says that adding an area rug in general has become more and more popular over the decades.

6. Adding the Fifth Wall to Your Decor
You might have noticed that we’ve been discussing not just the walls of a room but also incorporating the ceiling as well. This is the fifth wall that we’re referring to.
Michelle notes that incorporating the ceiling into your decor has become an increasingly popular design trend this year, and will continue to make waves in the new year.
When talking about incorporating the ceiling, this could mean adding bold colours that match the rest of the space, adding a contrasting colour to create intrigue, or even adding detailing like a shiplap, coffered or vaulted ceiling as well.
7. Putting the Spotlight on Statement Lighting
Lighting has always been a popular design trend and it may never not be. However, this year’s lighting design trend seems to be the emphasis on statement lighting in people’s homes. As seen in the latest dream home, unique statement lighting was almost everywhere in the home. According to Zeina, this helped create uniqueness and character in rooms that were blended.
Zeina states that traditional and contemporary lighting in living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms have become very popular. “We’re not talking about just chandeliers or ceiling lights,” she says, “we’re also referring to lights on the walls like sconces or even dynamic lamps and pendant lights that pull from a postmodernist feel.”

8. Including Chairs Instead of Sofas
One interesting design trend that Mary Lee and Michelle have noticed is adding chairs to your living space. Instead of adding a comfy sofa or a loveseat as the main seating area, people are embracing singular seating arrangements.
But you might be wondering, why eliminate a big furniture piece like a sofa in a living space? Everyone has a sofa! According to Mary Lee and Michelle, they both say it’s because this type of arrangement calls for more creative liberties in your living space.
“It might stem from the fact that we didn’t like people in our personal space during the COVID years. But because of this, people can rearrange their living rooms much easier, which can create some interesting layouts that can make a room feel unique,” Mary Lee says.
Michelle also notes that this trend is occurring more so in small living spaces, rather than in large living rooms. “It creates a conversational area for yourself and guests, which ironically makes it feel more intimate,” she says.
Accent chairs become the main seating arrangement, and chairs like the Reegan and the Marietta are becoming more popular La-Z-Boy products because of this.
9. When Modern and Vintage Come Together
Vintage has always been something that people seem to be interested in. Mary Lee hypothesizes that it’s because it brings us a sense of nostalgia. This could be true, as this design trend has always prevailed.
However, mixing old and new elements has become more and more demanding. Mary Lee says, “I have seen a lot of people create not just traditional living rooms, but also traditional dining rooms as well.”
Traditional elements for a living room include rounded arms for seating, button-tufted cushions, and cherry brown colours with ornate detailing on wooden table legs.
Dining rooms also embrace ornate detailing, as well as king and queen dining chairs that sit at the head of the table. These dining chairs look different from the other dining chairs on the side, sometimes with arms while the other chairs don’t have any.
10. Adding Curves to Your Spaces
Last but not least, Michelle notes that curved furniture and architecture are making a huge splash in 2025.
While a modern approach has always been a favourite for individuals–as seen in our modern organic and modern vintage sections–contemporary stylings are also at the forefront of people’s 2025 aesthetic checklist.
This means instead of people preferring squared tapered arms to their decor, they’re including curved arms and curved seats in their spaces.
You might even see curved arches in houses becoming a more popular trend this year as well. Curved arches visually draw attention to the height of your walls, making your room appear as though it is more spacious than it is.
