If you've ever visited the small towns around Ottawa, you might notice they all share a quaint, charming feel. Yet, each one has its own unique character, setting it apart from the others, and making every visit a distinctive experience.

For example, Navan, a greater township just outside of Orleans, has a knack for forestries that surround other homes. This so happens to be the location of our next design story!

La-Z-Boy Cyrville interior designer, Magaly del Castillo, worked with clients Debra and Doug to update their living space while maintaining a sense of sophistication. With a stunning view and classic architecture to work with, this project turned out to be an inspiring collaboration that Magaly will remember for a lifetime.

About the Project

The project began when Debra and Doug visited our La-Z-Boy showroom on Cyrville Road and met with current design consultant Cliff Norman. While talking with him they fell in love with the comfort of the Forum power reclining chair (now a discontinued product), but needed help integrating it into their living room. Because this type of request required extra help, Cliff introduced them to Magaly, and they quickly decided to take advantage of the complimentary in-home design services available.

Magaly visited Debra and Doug’s home to better understand their space and design preferences. “Nothing gives more information than seeing the space in person,” she notes.

The home’s open-concept layout featured a stunning great room with an impressive view through floor-to-ceiling windows, a central fireplace, and adjacent spaces for dining and relaxing.

The challenge? To maintain the classic elegance of the home while creating a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere.

The Interior Design Process

Magaly was initially taken aback by the open foyer to the main level during the in-home consultation. “It was beautiful,” she remarked.

And, because of its beauty, she focused on balancing the room's architecture and the client’s desire for a serene yet sophisticated design. The living room consisted of a sectional for primary seating, two accent chairs, a coffee table in the center and a fireplace and TV in the corner.

New call-to-action

Magaly also needed to select furniture that fit a soft grey, blue, and teal colour palette, while ensuring the overall design created a calm, zen-like atmosphere in the home. “It was all about balance for this space,” said Magaly.

While the furniture worked, Magaly knew there were better options that could bring the elevated look she envisioned for the room. Confident in her vision, she knew she was the right person to make it happen!

Furniture & Accessories Chosen

So, how did she do it?

To begin Magaly needed a main seating area that would become the backbone of the entire room. Because of the elevated approach, she decided to choose the Alexandria Sofa to sit right in front of the fireplace. This created a sense of symmetry and balance, along with a textured look of the fabric.

To keep the conversational circle Doug and Debra had before, Magaly decided to choose two recliners and an accent chair to close off the circle around the coffee table. She chose the Allegra Accent Chair, as well as two Forum Recliners.

The Forum Recliners helped replace the original single seating they had before, which was also a leather cover. Instead of matching the dark leather colour from before, Magaly decided on a light grey leather cover, emphasizing the light colour palette she kept to compliment the Alexandria.

As for the Allegra, Magaly chose a darker grey colour to create contrast within the space, since everything was lighter in appearance now.

With the furniture pieces selected, Magaly turned her attention to the details—introducing a larger area rug that tied together the room’s neutral tones. The rug's classic scroll pattern was echoed in throw pillows, artwork, and vases throughout the space, creating a harmonious flow.

Deciding on the tables, lamps, and artwork is like choosing the perfect accessories for an Armani suit,” Magaly says. “They are essential to completing the look and feel of the room.”

End Result

After everything was completed, Doug and Debra were thrilled with the transformation.

“The end result captured the style, mood, and functionality that we were looking for—and perfectly matched the one piece of artwork that we opted to keep. We were very pleased with the professionalism and efficiency of both the interior designer, Magaly del Castillo, and our salesperson, Cliff Norman.”

Doug and Debra also feel that the completed space perfectly balances sophistication with comfort, creating a welcoming environment that invites relaxation. The thoughtful furniture arrangement allowed the room to feel open and breathable, with clear pathways that made it easy to move around.

“All in all, the client’s great room became one of my favourite projects,” Magaly reflects. “The best part of my job is seeing a room come alive with each new addition, and creating a space that truly reflects the client’s taste.”
