La-Z-Boy iClean™ Review: Furniture Protection Fabric

Imagine this; you’re enjoying a lovely quiet evening at home on your new sofa. You’ve poured yourself a drink, and you’re catching up with some Netflix shows that you’ve meant to watch for ages. All of a sudden, your puppy jumps up on your lap to cuddle. Your red wine spills all over you, him and your sofa! Oh no, your dog is now pink, and your couch looks like it will never be the same!

You think to yourself, “How will I remove a stain like this from my sofa?” Then you remembered you had purchased iClean™ fabric from La-Z-Boy. You breathe a sigh of relief, retrieve a soft cloth and blot the stain until it’s gone. “Wonderful,” you say as you settle back down on the sofa to resume your binge-watching.

At La-Z-Boy, we’ve built our reputation on making and selling quality made furniture in North America for almost a century. But what about our fabric, is it also manufactured to stand the test of time? And is an upgrade to iClean™ fabric worth it?

iClean™ fabric: Is furniture fabric protection worth it?

For this article, we spoke with in-home designer Magaly Del Castillo, who’s been working at La-Z-Boy Ottawa for almost ten years. She says, ever since iClean™ fabric became available in 2016, she’s been recommending them to her clients. She says her clients love the idea of long-lasting furniture fabrics. It provides them with the peace of mind that’s priceless.

  1. What is iClean™?

iClean™ is a line of fabrics that repel stains no matter what your style. It’s available on most La-Z-Boy products. Repels everyday spills: coffee, wine, dirt, salsa and more!

iClean™ is an innovative technology that surrounds each fibre, creating a barrier of protection that repels spills before they turn into stains.

It’s a luxurious feel and exceptional comfort fabric available in a variety of colours and patterns. We recommend iClean™ for high traffic areas and everyday furniture.

2. Available iClean Fabrics: Colours/Patterns and Textures

Limitless with colour and style

When it comes to having plenty of choices, iClean’s got you covered. No matter what style of furniture you select, you can upholster your piece in a countless number of options that range from fabrics in all colours, textures and patterns.

Browse online and then visit your local store to start customizing. Select from patterns, solids and deep colours and textures.

*The appearance of actual covers may differ from what you see here

Choose from hundreds of different colours, patterns and prints. You’re sure to find an iClean™ fabric to match your style.

You can also choose from many different textures: Chenille, Smooth, Woven etc.

Magaly Loves the fact that there are pet-friendly options and other woven fabrics that have a texture to them. “Black and white threads going weft and warp* create something entertaining for the eye without too much of a pattern. It’s still neutral so that you can change up your accessories every few years, and it still works.”

*Weft and warp are the two basic components used in weaving to turn thread or yarn into fabric

3. iClean™ Recommended Cleaning Methods

Whether you have pets, kids or anyone else in the household, accidents happen.

Most liquid spills will bead up and be repelled from the fabric. Those that don’t, simply blot with a paper towel. For more significant spills, use a mild soap and water mix and see the charts below.

These charts contain the recommended cleaning methods of iClean™ fabrics for some of the most common household stains. For more specific directions on care and cleaning of fabric, visit: la-z-boy.com/Support/Fabric-Care or call 855-80-COMFORT or (855-802-6636).

When cleaning a liquid spill, immediately blot the fabric surface with a white cloth/towel to remove the spilled liquid. To spot clean the spilled area, soak a white clean cloth/towel in a mixture of soap & hot water and clean stained area in a gentle circular motion. If needed, take a damp, clean white cloth, and go over the affected area to remove any soap residue from the fabric.

Do not over wet the material. Pile fabrics may require additional light brushing in the stained area with a non-metallic, soft bristle brush to restore the appearance of the fabric or to reset the nap/pile direction.

If the soap and water mixture doesn’t completely remove the stain, then repeat the above process using a multi-purpose cleaner (such as Woolite Fabric and Upholstery Cleaner). Cushion covers should not be removed and laundered. On pile fabrics, the entire panel may need to be cleaned in a seam to seam fashion to restore the overall appearance of the fabric.

When cleaning a non-liquid spill, immediately remove the excess spilled material from the fabric by lifting the spilled material off the affected area with a butter knife and accumulating the spilled substance into a white cloth/towel.

*To make the soap and water mixture, take one teaspoon of a liquid detergent such as Tide and mix it with 16 oz. of water in a bowl or plastic container.

4. Price

There’s no denying that furniture fabric protection is more expensive than regular fabrics and iClean™ is no exception. With that in mind, If you need something that will stand up to stains, then iClean™ is worth the upgrade.

  • A La-Z-Boy sofa with iClean™ fabric will cost about $500-$800 more.
  • A La-Z-Boy recliner or chair with iClean™ fabric will cost about $300-$600 more.

Magaly says that if you buy something today for $500 and then in another five years you have to replace it, then there’s your $1000 right there. Not to mention, you’ll have to go through the process all over again. Whether you’re older and downsizing or moving into a condo, you have to take into account longevity.

“At the end of the day, you want to walk into your living room, look at your five-year-old sofa and say, ‘I’m glad I did that.’”

5. Is iClean™ fabric safe for your family?

Magaly had a client come into the store who had been researching iClean™ fabric, and worried about off-gassing*. Magaly assured her there would be no off-gassing from the material.

The only place you might get off-gassing* from is the foam from inside the cushions.

We are making less oil produced fabric now and have turned towards polyester. Polyester does not absorb anything; it repels liquids.

At La-Z-Boy, we consider ourselves environmentally aware. We as a society are beginning to understand that if we make small changes, it can have a significant impact.

*off-gassing: gives off a chemical, harmful smell, in the form of a gas.

6. iClean™ Warranty
