How to Get Started with your Bedroom Design ...
Designing a bedroom from scratch can feel overwhelming. As you begin your design process, Zeina recommends breaking it down into some preliminary steps.
Before diving into intricate design details like artwork or drapes, start by developing the bigger picture. Find some design inspiration, determine your style, think about colours, and consider your space.
Think of Function
Believe it or not, Zeina says function and practicality play a large role in your bedroom design.
As you begin selecting furniture, you must consider who the bedroom is for. Further, consider the size and shape of the room.
Is this the bedroom of a bachelor apartment meant for a single adult?
Or is this a large master bedroom meant for mom and dad?
Perhaps you are furnishing a small bedroom for your two young children?
Is it a nursery?
The answers to these questions will determine what type of bedroom furniture and decor that will serve your needs, says Zeina.
Measure your Room
Before buying furniture and decor, make sure to measure your bedroom.
With detailed measurements, you will have a better idea of the size of bed that you have room for. Further, measurements will help you determine the extra space you may have for bedside tables, drawers, and maybe even a reading chair.

Create a Vision Board
Next, Zeina suggests finding design inspiration and creating a vision board.
You can find boundless inspiration from interior design magazines, blogs, and furniture retail stores. With this, collect pictures of everything you like, from completed bedroom designs to furniture you want to purchase.
Zeina says you can use an online platform like Pinterest or create your vision board the old-fashioned way, with scissors and glue!
This exercise will help you create the whole vision of your bedroom design. From this vision, you can then begin to narrow down the details.
Determine your Design Style
With a completed vision board, it is time to determine your design style.
There is a wide range of interior design styles to choose from. Traditional, contemporary, modern, comfortably casual, and boho-chic … just to name a few.
If you are unsure of which style you are trying to achieve, refer back to the images on your vision board to determine the specific look you are attracted to.
Choose a Colour Palette
In conjunction with determining your design style, you will also need to choose a colour palette. These two decisions often go hand-in-hand as a colour palette can influence the design style of your bedroom.
Typically, homeowners like to coordinate the colour palettes within their home. With this being said, a bedroom is a personal sanctuary that can be anything you make it. The bedroom is a place to let your true personality shine.
This is especially true when it comes to a children’s bedroom! Their bedroom is the one place in the home that can be uniquely theirs, with princess pinks or dinosaur blues.

1. Scale Furniture Properly
First and foremost, Zeina says that you should ensure that the size of your bedroom furniture is coordinated.
The size and height of the bed should be relative to the size and the height of the nightstand. Ideally, the nightstand should be the same height as the bed.
Further, the width of the bed should be coordinated with the width of the dresser. Pair a wide dresser with a king or queen-sized bed and pair a narrow dresser with a twin or double-sized bed.
If you plan on having an accent chair in your bedroom, the size of this accent chair should also be coordinated with the scale of the bedroom set.
Finally, an area rug should bring all the furniture pieces together. The size of the area rug should be large enough to rest beneath the bed and nightstands.
2. Keep it Functional
Zeina also highlights the importance of functionality. When determining the layout of your bedroom furniture, be sure to consider how you will use each piece of furniture and traffic flow.
According to Zeina, the relationship between the furniture and its function is very important. Having a bed to sleep in, a nightstand to place a tea, a chair to read, and a dresser to store your clothes create a completely functional bedroom.
Traffic flow is equally important in a bedroom layout, says Zeina. Specifically, walking room between the bed and the rest of the furniture is key.
As previously mentioned, this is where measuring your space comes in very handy!
3. Create Symmetry
Zeina says the best bedroom designs are based on symmetry!
You can achieve symmetry by placing your bed in the center of the room. Frame the bed with two identical nightstands on either side. Decorate these nightstands with two lamps. Parallel to the end of the bed, you can place a dresser of the same width. This whole furniture arrangement can be placed in the center of a large area rug.
Such symmetry creates balance, harmony, and an aesthetically pleasing look.
4. Make a Statement Out of Your Headboard
Additionally, Zeina encourages making a statement out of the headboard.
You can do so by finding something tall with an interesting shape and material. A statement headboard is big, bold, and helps make the bed the focal point of the bedroom.
5. Create a Calm Environment with a Soothing Colour Palette
While we are going for style, the bedroom is for rest after all. With this, Zeina suggests creating a calm environment with a soothing colour palette.
Below are some colour pallet suggestions that promote rest and relaxation:
- Browns, Whites, & Blues
- Seafoam & Sands
- Cool Creams
- Blues & Greys
- Soft Whites, Pinks, & Greys
- Creams, Greys, & Browns
While mixing these calming colours, don’t be afraid to mix materials as well. Zeina says that elements like wood, metal, and stone pair nicely with fabrics and textiles. This combination can bring a cozy feel to a bedroom.
6. Lighting is Everything
Zeina says lighting is everything!
There are three different types of bedroom lighting: ambient, task, and accent lighting.
Ambient lighting will allow you to fill the room with a base amount of light, while task and accent fixtures work to target specific areas around the room. This way, you always have just the right amount of illumination in the places you need it.
Layering each type of lighting is important for setting the tone and creating a relaxing mood in the room, says Zeina. She suggests having a reading light on your nightstand, a good light for getting dressed, and perhaps a night light for going to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
7. How to Make a Layered Bed
With the bed being the focal point of the bedroom, why not dress it up?!
Zeina recommends decorating the bed by layering it with colours, textures, throws, and accent pillows. She outlines the following steps for making a layered bed ...
Step 1: Put on your sheets and duvet/quilt as you normally would.
Step 2: Fold down the top sheet and duvet/quilt ¼ of the way down the length of the bed.
Step 3: Set up your standard pillows and euro shams upwards.
Step 4: Fold a throw blanket at the foot of the bed.

8. Pay Attention to Storage
The bedroom is the space you want to relax in but don't make it uncomfortable with unnecessary clutter. To avoid clutter, Zeina says you should optimize storage space.
Consider multifunctional furniture that duals as storage space.
- Nightstands with drawers and shelves.
- Bedframe with drawers underneath.
- Spacious dressers.
- An armoire with extra storage space.
- A decorative bench with interior storage.
9. Ground the Space with Rugs
Finally, many people don't see the value of an area rug in the bedroom, but in fact, it is a very important layer in this space.
Zeina says an area rug grounds the bedroom furniture arrangement and pulls each individual piece together.
With this, it is important to pick the right size area rug. When you can step comfortably out of bed onto your rug on all sides, you've found the right size, says Zeina.
