Out with the old, in with the new… at least, that’s how the saying goes. Although this can apply to physical pieces, sometimes a furniture style can look timeless and still work in a room.

This is how Ghada Shaheen describes the Liam furniture family at La-Z-Boy Ottawa & Kingston. Ghada is a design consultant at La-Z-Boy Cyrville and has sold many Liam furniture products since its introduction this fall.

“A lot of us compare it to the Forum, which is now discontinued,” she says. “It has the same timeless style and works well with a lot of different furniture styles.”

Even though past La-Z-Boy designs might have inspired the Liam, how does it compare to current furniture products in our showrooms? What makes this furniture family unique from others?

Liam Furniture Family (Available Frame Options)

Before we get into our deep dive into the Liam furniture family, it is always best to familiarize yourself with the different furniture frames included in the furniture family. As listed below, the Liam is available as a recliner, a loveseat and a sofa.

Liam Recliner

If you’re looking for individualized comfort for your living room, the Liam Recliner is a perfect choice. Users can effortlessly recline by using the convenient handle located on the frame’s outside arms.

The Liam Recliner can come as a rocking recliner, a wall recliner and a gliding recliner.

When not in a reclined position, the rocking and gliding recliner work similarly in the sense that they can rock and glide, respectively, in a smooth and graceful motion. While the rocking recliner moves more in an arched position, the gliding recliner moves in a linear position.

On the other hand, the wall recliner can be placed mere inches away from a wall while still being able to recline fully.

Liam Reclining Loveseat

With two seats in this furniture frame, the Liam Reclining Loveseat is great for those who wish to share a spot with a friend, family, or that special someone. 

The Liam Reclining Loveseat has the same feature as the wall recliner. As a wall hugger, you can place it mere inches from the wall while still being able to fully recline. 

Liam Reclining Sofa

With the Liam Recliner Sofa, you can enjoy family-friendly comfort and relaxation with three seat cushions. Like the Liam Loveseat and wall recliner, the sofa needs little clearance from the wall to recline fully.

Unique Features

The Liam is an inviting seat that creates a relaxing reclining experience in your home. Balancing comfort and style together, the Liam features a slim silhouette, flared arms and clean lines, which are prominent on the tall back seats. 

Ghada adds, “the Liam is considered a modern recliner, but I find that this recliner has a timeless look to it.” 

This look might come across as timeless because of its streamlined design, which can make these furniture items work well in many different settings. 

Ghada also notes that the backs of the loveseat and sofa are split within the individual seats, so it can be easy to disassemble your furniture pieces if you need to move them.

Size & Dimensions

The size & dimensions can be detrimental if furniture does not fit the room or is too large to deliver successfully. Whenever you are adding new furniture to any room, you must always make sure to Measure Your Space.

When looking at the Liam furniture family, Ghada says, “the Liam has a very slim and clean design, making it look modern and compact.”

Regarding the size, however, the Liam sits at an average scale, meaning those with an average height of 5’4” to 5’9” will feel comfortable sitting on this furniture.

While your height can be a considerable factor, it is important to note that height guidelines are NOT set in stone. The way you sit in a furniture item can drastically affect how someone might find a seat comfortable.

Options & Upgrades

When compared to other La-Z-Boy furniture families, Liam has plenty of customization options to choose from. Keep in mind that the cost of the Liam furniture will increase with your selection of options and upgrades.  

Fabric & Leather Options

La-Z-Boy has over 800 fabrics and leathers to choose from, making the experience of personalizing your furniture seemingly endless.

When choosing fabrics, the Liam comes in 5 select fabric covers. Select fabrics will not increase the price of your furniture. Customers can choose between twilight, granite, fawn, mocha, and navy. These fabric covers do not increase the price of the Liam furniture.

When it comes to leather options, there are 2 select cover options. These leather options include a pebble and an espresso colour.

Along with the leather selection, a leather match is also available, as well as recycled leather for Alternative Leather Options. All leather options, including the select leather, will always increase the overall cost.

Ultimately, choosing between fabric or leather is up to you if you’re willing to spend extra cash on leather products.

Handle Options

To add more style to your La-Z-Boy manual recliner, you have the option to customize the length and material of the convenient reclining handle.

At an extra cost, you can opt to elongate the handle if you find it too short for your comfort. Additionally, you can choose from a variety of materials for the handle, including wooden, brushed nickel, or matte black. The chrome handle can also be elongated, matching the wooden one in size.

What’s more, for all left-handed users, you can change your handle from the standard right side to the left. This also comes at an additional cost.

Optional Swivel Base

At an additional cost, the Liam rocking and gliding recliners can include a swivel base. Swivel bases at La-Z-Boy can rotate at a full 360-degree angle so you can be at the centre of all the action.

You can also upgrade your swivel base into a power swivel recliner, which can recline at the touch of a button. The power swivel base, however, only rotates 165 degrees to prevent the power cord from getting tangled within the furniture frame.

Power Upgrade with Adjustable Headrest

You can upgrade the Liam Furniture Family to power. 

Unlike manual furniture that uses a handle or latch, power recliners come with a control panel or a wireless remote for easy reclining at the touch of a button. You can also adjust the headrest support with this convenient feature.

The adjustable headrest allows you to move the head of the recliner from 0-55 degrees, giving you more range of motion with your reclining positions.

What’s more, the recliners have USB ports next to the control panels to charge your electronic devices and two memory settings that allow you to save any of your favourite relaxing positions. This way, you can easily recline back to the position you favour quickly and accurately. 

All power upgrades can be cordless, thanks to our rechargeable battery pack. With this, you can place your power recliners anywhere without worrying about plugging them into an electrical outlet.

Adjustable Lumbar Support

The Liam can also be upgraded to include adjustable lumbar support for an additional cost when choosing the power option.

Like the headrest feature, you can control the lower lumbar area of your recliner with the wireless remote. In this case, the lumbar support can expand 3 inches out or deflate to perfectly match the unique curvature of your lumbar spine.

Console Upgrade (Loveseat Only)

The Liam Wall Reclining Loveseat has the option to include a console in the middle of the seat. This handy center console adds extra storage. 

Included cup holders allow you to sit back and relax without having to get up to grab a drink. Further, the console offers an interior electronic charging input instead of the ports outside the loveseat.

If the console interests you, the power model has an upgrade with headrest control or headrest & lumbar support to enhance your Liam Loveseat into a truly comfortable experience.

Cost

In terms of cost, the Liam furniture products fall within the low-mid price range at La-Z-Boy.

Ghada says the recliners are in the lower price range, while the loveseat and sofa are considered mid. “When you add the cost of leather and power to the furniture, it can get expensive for some people,” she says.

While the cost of the Liam furniture is considered standard at La-Z-Boy, it is important to note that La-Z-Boy furniture is considered more expensive on the market. Warranty

The Liam is covered by La-Z-Boy’s Limited Lifetime Warranty. This warranty covers the repair or replacement of the frame, spring systems, and mechanism, given that they are quality-crafted and built for long-lasting comfort.

While still quality-crafted, other aspects of the product, such as fabrics, leather, and cushion, are not meant to last a lifetime. However, these parts are still covered by the La-Z-Boy Manufacturer’s Warranty for a given period of time.

Is the Liam Furniture Family Right For You?

If you’re uncertain, here are some extra pointers to help you choose which furniture is the right choice. The three main things you should consider are your budget, the functionality of the furniture, and overall style.

Looking at the cost, the prices of the Liam can fluctuate substantially, given the wide range of upgrades available. Ghada mentions that because this is a new furniture family, its recliner prices are more affordable than other furniture frames at La-Z-Boy.

The loveseat and the sofa, however, might get more costly due to the fact that they include wall-away mechanisms instead of regular reclining mechanisms. Wall-away furniture will always be more costly than regular furniture pieces.

If you’re looking for furniture that can fit a small space, this furniture family is right for you.  Ghada says, “even though it can take up more space with the sofa, the loveseat and recliners would be great for those living in apartments looking for recliners.”

Ghada also says she has sold the Liam furniture to clients shorter than the recommended height, who was happy with the comfort. However, if you are a taller individual at 6”, this furniture family might not be right for you.
