What Are La-Z-Boy Seat Cushions Made Of?

The core of a seat cushion affects how it feels and how long it lasts. Most furniture seat cushions are made from foam, polyester, feathers, or a combination of these materials, but not all cushions provide the same level of support. La-Z-Boy seat cushions are designed to hold their shape while providing a balance of softness and firmness.

Foam Density & Firmness: Understanding Cushion Quality

Foam cushions are classified by density and firmness. 

Foam density measures durability, while firmness determines how soft or hard a cushion feels. La-Z-Boy uses high-resiliency foam, which is more durable than standard polyurethane foam. The density of the foam indicates how much weight it can handle before losing shape, while firmness (measured by Indentation Load Deflection or ILD) affects how the cushion feels when you sit on it.

Contrary to common belief, density and firmness are not the same. Higher-density foam lasts longer, while firmness is a matter of personal preference. Some people prefer firmer cushions for better back support, while others enjoy plush, softer seating.

To begin, La-Z-Boy uses Premiere Construction within our stationary furniture to ensure your furniture remains sturdy and comfortable for a long time. It is also used in our award-winning Duo Collection.

ComfortCore® Zoned Cushion Breakdown

La-Z-Boy’s cushions are also made with ComfortCore® technology, engineered to distribute weight evenly and reduce pressure points, making them a step above standard foam cushions. The unique zoned technology ensures targeted support in different areas of the seat, providing both softness and structure.

Each ComfortCore® cushion consists of multiple foam layers with varying densities:

1. Front Zone: Soft foam provides pressure relief behind the knees (3” thick, 27lb ILD, 1.8 density high-resiliency foam).
2. Rear Zone: Firm foam supports the lower back and hips (3” thick, 36lb ILD, 2.5 density high-resiliency foam).
3. Core Layers: High-resiliency foam enhances durability (1” thick, 24lb ILD, 1.8 density high comfort polyfoam).
4. Top Layer: Plush polyfoam adds an extra layer of comfort (1” thick, 12lb ILD, 1.5 density conventional foam).

This innovative construction ensures that La-Z-Boy cushions remain comfortable and supportive for years without excessive sagging.

THE ZONES OF THE COMFORCORE® SEAT CUSHION

Standard vs. Optional Cushion Upgrades

La-Z-Boy offers standard ComfortCore® cushions with all Stationary furniture. However, customers can choose firmer cushions for additional support. Upgrades include:

• Firm Seat Option: $150 per single seat, $400 for a three-seater sofa.
• Seat & Back Cushion Upgrade: $300 per single seat, $900 for a three-seater sofa.

How Do Reclining Furniture Cushions Compare?

Since we’ve talked so much about our stationary cushions, let’s switch gears and focus on our reclining furniture.

La-Z-Boy’s reclining sofas and chairs are designed with high-resiliency contoured foam, offering superior support in both upright and reclined positions. Unlike many manufacturers that use blown-in fiber for cushion padding, La-Z-Boy cuts foam to exact shapes, ensuring better support and longevity.

Different recliner styles feature unique cushion constructions:

• Ultra Plush Seat Cushion: A softer seat that has an extra layer of 12 lb polyurethane foam on top of the foam core.

• Original Bucket Seat Cushion: Made of thin wedge-shaped polyurethane foam side fillers that create a soft bucket seat.

• Sculpted Bucket Seat Cushion: Same as Original Bucket Seat, but includes top and bottom polyurethane foam fillers.

• Reclining Sofa Sculpted Bucket Seat Cushion: Same as the Sculpted Bucket Seat Cushion but features 36 lb ILD/2.5 density top foam wedge fillers for increased support.

• Hybrid Bucket Seat Cushion: A mix of firm and soft support that extend to the front of the seat
• Reclining Sofa Hybrid Bucket Seat Cushion: Same as the Hybrid Bucket Seat Cushion but with a contoured-cut polyurethane foam core instead.

• Faux Box Border Seat Cushion: Features a complete square foam core, giving the cushion a look resembling stationary seating.

• Summit Seat Cushion: A high-support cushion that features five-seat springs and the thickest foam core out of all other seats.
• Standard Lift Seat Cushion: The same thickness as the Summit Seat Cushions, but on a lower profile chair–also offers extra spring support and a deck pad that reinforces the seat.

Each style is tailored to specific comfort preferences, ensuring a recliner that fits your needs.

Custom Upholstery Options for Seat Cushions
