Sectionals are the perfect furniture item for a more social and casual seating arrangement. However, the shape and size of a sectional tend to take up more space than a traditional sofa.

Do you have a small space? Do you feel confined to the size of a sofa but love the look and functionality of a sectional? Not to worry! Racha tells us, "You can still have a sectional in your living room even if it is small!"

Racha Pharaon, a design consultant at La-Z-Boy Kanata, also says, “Sectionals are great for social butterflies but also good for anyone who needs more seats in their living room.”

At La-Z-Boy, sectionals are customizable with a range of module pieces. With this, you can customize the shape of a sectional to be as big or small as your wish. Further, some sectional frames at La-Z-Boy are more petite in design.

In this article, we will highlight the 5 best La-Z-Boy sectionals for small spaces!

What is Considered a Small Space?

Before we get into our list of small sectionals, let's ask ourselves, what is considered a small space?

If we look at the average size of a living room, we see that the measurements are around 15 x 20 ft. So, anything smaller than that can be considered small.

You will typically find small living rooms in apartments, condos, or small townhouses. That said, most modern apartments have an open concept design so that residents can utilize more space in their homes. Still, these residents must often think creatively with their furniture choices, like investing in multifunctional furniture items.

Remember to Measure Your Space!

Racha informs us that no matter what new furniture you purchase, you must always measure your space to know if your furniture will fit in your room.

This is especially true for sectionals since they come in many different configurations. To measure your space properly, measure each side of the room and write it down.

Consider obstacles like other furniture items, doors, and windows. Once you have taken detailed measurements, you will have a clear indicator of the space you have left for new furniture while still allowing for appropriate traffic flow. The average amount of space for optimal traffic flow is around 2-3 feet between furniture items.

1. The Meyer Sectional

The first sectional on our list of small sectionals is the Meyer. The Meyer Sectional is a sleek and casual furniture piece that fits any size space–depending on your sectional shape, of course!

With a combination of clean lines, narrow track arms, welt trim and decorative wood legs, this furniture exudes a classic, understated style that blends easily with any decor. Racha says the narrow arms are a great example of why the Meyer is perfect for a small space.

What’s more, patented ComfortCore® cushions provide just the right amount of support for a long or short sit. Modules with arms include one 20” accent pillow (corner modules include two 20” pillows).

Modular pieces for the Meyer Sectional include

  • Left/Right arm sitting chaise
  • Left/Right arm stitting cuddler
  • Left/Right arm sitting loveseat
  • Armless chair
  • 90-degree corner
  • Rounded corner

Racha says that Meyer’s armless seats are 24” wide, meaning it is one of the smaller armless seats out of any sectional configuration at La-Z-Boy. “If you decide to add an armless chair, it won’t take up as much space as others,” she says.

For a small space, Racha recommends having a two-seater loveseat on either side of the sectional as a chaise on the other side. You can also add an armless chair or a corner piece in the middle if you have enough space.”

The Meyer is also available as a chair, a loveseat, a sofa, and a matching ottoman. To learn more about the Meyer Sectional take a look at this article.

2. The Colby Duo Sectional

Next on our list is the Colby Duo® Sectional, which is considered a reclining furniture piece but disguises itself as a stationary furniture item.

This is because the Colby is part of the Duo® Collection, which is a collection of furniture items that appear as stationary pieces but have the unexpected ability to recline. This is similar to our high-leg recliner selection at La-Z-Boy, which are often referred to as Secret Recliners.

The Colby features graceful rolled arms, decorative wood legs, padded outer arms and a padded outer back. Colby is versatile in style as well, with the ability to look good in a formal or casual setting, depending on the upholstery cover.

Simply use the dual controllers on the outside arms to easily recline in multiple different positions. Built-in USB ports also allow you to charge your electronic devices.

Modular pieces for the Colby Duo® Sectional include:

  • Left/Right arm sitting chaise with storage
  • Left/Right arm sitting reclining loveseat
  • Armless chair
  • Armless loveseat
  • Corner unit

The smallest configuration of the Colby Sectional would be the left or right arm sitting loveseat with a left or right arm sitting chaise.

Racha says that the chaise might be too big for certain spaces. “The chaise might be a little bit bigger than other modular pieces, but if you configure your sectional in an L-shape, it can be more convenient for small space users.”

The chaise might also be advantageous for small spaces because it has storage space underneath the seat.

The Colby is also available as a reclining chair, loveseat, and sofa. You can learn more about the Colby Duo® Furniture Family by checking out this article.

3. The Draper Sectional

Up next, the Draper Sectional is the only furniture selection on this list only to be featured in our leather selection.

Modular pieces for the Draper Sectional include:

  • Left/Right arm sitting loveseat
  • Left/Right side sitting bumper chaise
  • Armless chair
  • 90-degree corner

This selection also makes it the sectional with the least modular pieces to choose from.

Since there is less selection for sectional configurations, Racha says that the smallest configuration would be to have two loveseats on each end and use one of the corner pieces to make it an L-shape. What's interesting about this sectional is the fact that it comes with an armless end piece in the bumper chaise. This creates a more contemporary style and optimizes the space in the room

Racha mentions the armless seats being similar to the Meyer in width. “The Draper’s armless chairs are 22” wide, meaning you can fit them in a small space easier than other armless sectional modular pieces.”

Alternatively, Racha also says that this sectional might also look good in an office space because of its leather appearance.

The Draper is also available as a chair, a loveseat, a sofa, and a matching ottoman. You can learn more about the Draper Furniture Family by checking out this article.

4. The Trouper Sectional

The Trouper Sectional, another reclining sectional, brings relaxation in your home to another level. The trouper features sculpted bucket seats as the split back cushion provides soft support for your head, neck, and lumbar.

This sectional, depending on if it is manual or reclining, allows you to recline with either a latch or a 4-button control panel, which is located on the outside of the furniture frame.

Modular pieces for the Trouper Sectional include:

Racha says that she measured both the Trouper  to see if they would work in a small space, and turns out it made the cut!

The Trouper might not be the best choice when picking a sectional for your small living room because of “the big plushy arms,” in Racha’s words. Instead, she recommends this for a small basement since there is generally more room in a basement than a living room.

Racha says one of the better Trouper configurations for small space is a left or right arm sitting loveseat with a left or right arm sitting chaise seat, almost making it a sofa with a chaise seat.

She also mentions that the armless chair for the Trouper is 24” wide, making it the smallest armless chair option for a sectional on this list.

The Trouper is also available as a rocker or wall recliner, a reclining loveseat, and a sofa. To learn more about the Trouper Sectional, take a look at this article.

5. The Montrose Sectional

Last but not least on our list is the Montrose Sectional Sofa, which offers sophistication in style, casual comfort and versatility.

What’s interesting about the Montrose is that its modular pieces work independently from each other or all together. The distinction lies in the placement of connectors within the furniture frame. Unlike other sectionals at La-Z-Boy, where the connectors are typically positioned on the side of the pieces, the connectors in question are located below the furniture frame.

It also has a minimal amount of pieces for a sectional at La-Z-Boy. So, even though it is versatile in shape and style, there isn’t much you need to do for this furniture piece to shine.

Racha states that the Montrose also works as a section for small spaces because of its armless chairs can be used independently as accent chairs if you feel like changing your furniture around if you get tired of the sectional configuration. "Instead of a small sectional in your space, you could change it up and use the armless chairs and the ottoman as scattered pieces in the room."

The Montrose includes a corner piece, an armless chair, and an ottoman with storage.

Modular pieces for the Montrose Sectional include

  • Armless chair
  • 90-Degree Corner unit
  • Ottoman w/ Storage

6. The Piper Sofa w/ Chaise - Honourable Mention

As an honourable mention, Racha includes the Piper in her list of small sectionals. Piper’s sleek, streamlined style fits in with just about any decor, from ultra-modern to comfortably casual.

The Piper is made with Premier Construction offering long-lasting comfort and support, while the elegant, modern arms and decorative wood legs bring just a touch of an upscale vibe.

Racha says the reason why the Piper is included is that “This is one of the only sofas we offer at La-Z-Boy that comes with a chaise.” So, if you’re looking for something with more space, like a sectional, but isn’t a sectional, the Piper might be right for you.

The unique addition of the chaise offers even more space to relax than the regular sofa. Customers can also place the chaise cushion on the left, right or middle seat cushion.
