Now more than ever, buying things locally has never been more important. A common question we receive from clients looking for furniture is: Where is La-Z-Boy furniture made?
While La-Z-Boy Ottawa, Gatineau and Kingston is a well-known and locally trusted Canadian-operated dealer, many customers aren’t sure where our furniture is manufactured. Given the global nature of furniture production, some wonder if we outsource manufacturing overseas like other companies.
The answer? La-Z-Boy remains committed to manufacturing much of its furniture in North America, with primary courses coming from parts of Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
While some components come from global sources, most of our recliners, chairs, sofas, and sectionals are built at our plants in the U.S. and Mexico before being shipped to La-Z-Boy locations in Ottawa, Gatineau and Kingston every week.
In this article, we’ll be taking a deep dive into how this works, and why we our company does what it does in keeping our furniture in North America, keeping most of the revenue in Canada, and being a proud Canadian-operated branch of the company.

“It is important to note, however, that La-Z-Boy Ottawa, Gatineau and Kingston only employ people in Canada and not in the United States or Mexico,” says David Maxwell, owner of the La-Z-Boy dealers in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec.
Unlike many furniture companies that outsourced production during the 2008 economic downturn, La-Z-Boy continued to manufacture most of its furniture in North America. This commitment ensures high-quality craftsmanship while supporting jobs in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
Most La-Z-Boy furniture sold in Ottawa, Gatineau and Kingston is manufactured in Dayton, Tennessee. This plant, which opened in 1973, is a key production facility within the company.
Although most of our furniture is manufactured in this facility, the revenue obtained from our furniture stays in Canada, going directly to Canadian employees, local businesses in the community, and Canadian suppliers.
While La-Z-Boy primarily manufactures in North America, it also has global manufacturing facilities in other countries to support furniture coming from our European Collection and other products like our Modern Pedestal Recliners and New Swivel Gliding Recliners. These facilities produce unique styles that may not be found in the standard North American lineup.
David Maxwell also notes that La-Z-Boy Ottawa, Gatineau and Kingston do not manufacture any furniture in China.
La-Z-Boy has been crafting furniture for over 90 years, prioritizing quality, innovation, and comfort. From its humble beginnings with the first reclining wood-slat chair in 1928, the brand has grown into one of the most recognized names in furniture.

Today, La-Z-Boy employs thousands of skilled workers across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. These workers:
While automation plays a role in modern manufacturing, handcrafting remains central to the process. Small, specialized teams work together to assemble, upholster, and test each La-Z-Boy piece before it reaches customers.
David notes that La-Z-Boy Ottawa, Gatineau and Kingston locations employ over 100 people alone, which has served nearly 200,000 families in these regions for the last 25 years.
"Where and how your furniture is made matters. Our La-Z-Boy dealer takes pride in supporting Canadian jobs and maintaining high-quality craftsmanship for the community,” he says.
Building a La-Z-Boy recliner, sofa, or sectional involves multiple components and materials sourced from around the world. While final assembly occurs in North America, some materials come from global suppliers.
For example, a La-Z-Boy plant in Mexico may receive fabric rolls from Asia. The fabric is cut and sewn in Mexico before being shipped to Dayton, TN, where it becomes part of a finished La-Z-Boy recliner or sofa.
La-Z-Boy’s final assembly process is labour-intensive, emphasizing craftsmanship and quality control. At the Dayton, TN plant, skilled teams:
Once the furniture is assembled, packaged, and shipped, it arrives at La-Z-Boy Ottawa, Gatineau and Kingston locations. Here, our team:
Because of this process, customers rarely receive their recliner in the original manufacturer’s box unless requested. This allows us to ensure each piece meets La-Z-Boy’s high-quality standards.
"Quality inspections play a key role throughout the process—from raw materials to final delivery in Ottawa, Gatineau and Kingston,” says David.
